Kier Construction has recently won a £25 million bid to repair the Grade A listed Glasgow School of Art’s Mackintosh Building (GSA), which was destroyed by fire in 2014.

Kier successfully fought off competition from McAlpine, Balfour Beatty and John Graham. Brian McQuade, Managing Director of Kier Construction, Scotland, said: “it’s a huge honour to be working on restoring such a culturally significant project.”

Liz Davidson, Mackintosh Restoration Senior Project Manager, stated that Kier delivered “a fine balance between offering good value and exceptional quality” in securing the bid.

Work will commence from July and will be completed in two phases; phase one will incorporate repairing external features to ensure the building is fully weather proof and repairing stonework internally and externally, with phase two commencing in 2017 in the restoration of the east and west wings. The work is to be fully completed in 2019.

Kier will work in partnership with other experienced craft specialists in the restoration of the original designs and mechanisms to ensure work is completed within agreed timescales and is of high standard. This collaboration will prove to be essential in moving the project forward. Kier will also work alongside Page/Park Architects.
