Larsen & Toubro and NVIDIA announce a gigawatt-scale AI factory venture to establish sovereign computing infrastructure as part of the IndiaAI Mission

Construction giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced a proposed venture under the IndiaAI Mission to build sovereign, scalable gigawatt-scale NVIDIA AI factory infrastructure.

The initiative integrates L&T’s engineering and infrastructure development with NVIDIA’s AI stack to push India’s ambition to be a global AI powerhouse.

The venture is aimed at enterprises, policymakers and global off-takers seeking production-grade capacity anchored in India’s industrial transformation.

By deploying AI-ready data centre infrastructure and advanced computing platforms, the partnership will support large-scale workloads across priority sectors including manufacturing, energy, and public services, moving the nation from AI experimentation to production-scale deployment.

Building sovereign scalable national infrastructure

The venture supports the creation of sovereign AI infrastructure that allows critical data, models and workloads to be trained and deployed within India while remaining interoperable with global ecosystems.

This sovereign-by-design fabric serves domestic requirements and global hyperscalers looking to deploy large-scale capacity from India as a strategic hub. The venture plans to develop a gigawatt-scale AI data centre factory, providing capacity for high-density, next-generation workloads.

This model will deliver advanced services to India and global firms, providing standardised, enterprise-grade capabilities that enable predictable performance, security, and time-to-value for various industrial and services use cases.

Scaling capacity in Chennai and Mumbai

Infrastructure expansion will begin by scaling NVIDIA GPU cluster deployment at L&T's Chennai data centre up to 30 MW capacity within its 300-acre campus.

A new 40 MW data centre in Mumbai is currently under execution. These facilities are designed to allow customers to expand in India efficiently and sustainably.

The venture also enables L&T and its group companies to deploy live AI agents on a sovereign cloud. This fosters a self-sustaining innovation hub, such as the "Lights-Out Factory" framework that leverages NVIDIA Omniverse libraries to transform industrial operations and agentic AI deployment across L&T’s diverse business interests.

Executing nation building through digital foundations

S N said: “India’s enterprises are ready to move from AI pilots to production-scale deployment. The investment establishes the foundation – secure, scalable and sovereign infrastructure – required to power manufacturing, energy, financial services, healthcare and public services.

"With NVIDIA’s platforms and L&T’s execution strength, we are building infrastructure that will enable AI to deliver measurable economic impact."

S N added that the partnership establishes the foundation required to power essential services. The infrastructure buildout is intended to ensure that India is at the forefront of the global digital economy while serving domestic and international demand for accelerated computing.

NVIDIA

Powering the largest buildout in history

“AI is driving the largest infrastructure buildout in human history – everyone will use it, every company will be powered by it and every country will build it," said Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of NVIDIA.

He added: "Prime Minister Modi has outlined a bold vision to democratise AI access across the Global South and position India as a global hub for digital infrastructure.

"Together with L&T – an 88-year-old engineering and nation-building leader – we are laying the foundation for world-class AI infrastructure that will power India’s growth and help realise the full vision of India AI.”

IndiaAI Mission: driving economic growth

The IndiaAI Mission, which oversees this venture, is a national programme aimed at establishing a robust and inclusive AI ecosystem. It is structured around several areas, including the IndiaAI Compute Pillar, which focuses on providing high-end GPUs to democratise access to computational resources.

By building a nationally accessible GPU backbone, the mission ensures that AI development is not monopolised. Other pillars include the development of indigenous foundation models and datasets.

The venture between L&T and NVIDIA advances the vision of "Making AI in India and Making AI Work for India," creating a multiplier effect for the economy through increased productivity and efficiency.
