Volvo Construction Equipment unveils future innovations
Autonomous equipment is transforming construction industry with efficiency and sustainability gains driving market growth worldwide

The autonomous construction equipment market is expected to see substantial growth, from US$4.43bn in 2024 to an estimated US$9.86bn by 2030, a study shows.

A report from MarketsandMarkets, an intelligence and market research platform, says the rising need for automation is driving expansion in response to labour shortages, coupled with the benefits of improving safety, cost efficiency, and environmentally sustainable solutions.

However, it also points out that challenges such as high initial investments, regulatory hurdles and infrastructure limitations still need to be addressed for widespread adoption.

Construction equipment, particularly excavators, will be at the forefront of the transition to autonomy, the report says.

Electrically propelled equipment fast-growing segment

The electric autonomous construction equipment sector expects the fastest growth by 2030, driven by advancements in battery technology and a global push toward sustainability.

Electric excavators, loaders, and haul trucks with autonomous features like automated digging and grade control systems are transforming urban construction .

Their silent operation and reduced emissions make them ideal for urban environments, while advances in battery technology enable longer operational ranges and faster charging times.

Electric propulsion simplifies the integration of sensors and software for autonomous functionality, optimising energy consumption and improving efficiency.

Enhanced cameras, sensors, and data compression technologies further augment performance, spurring electric autonomous construction equipment demand.

The region's robust infrastructure and demand for mined materials such as gold, copper, and lithium drive efficiency improvements and attract investments in autonomous equipment. Prominent manufacturers like

Caterpillar and John Deere are at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning into their offerings. Strategic collaborations between equipment manufacturers and technology giants are accelerating the adoption of autonomous construction equipment.  Such partnerships are vital for improving efficiency across mining, construction, and agriculture industries.

Opportunities and challenges

Key Drivers:

  • Growth in infrastructure development and mining activities.
  • Rising automation in vineyards and agriculture.
    Barriers
  • High initial investments.
  • Regulatory compliance challenges.
    Opportunities
  • Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.
    Challenges
  • Cybersecurity risks associated with autonomous systems.

Construction 'behind curve on AI

Although construction is moving ahead on automation, it is largely behind the curve on AI adoption. The British Standards Institution (BSI) recently said the UK's built environment sector is lagging behind in AI readiness, even if AI is transforming project planning, site safety and resource management,

The BSI is the UK's national standards body that produces technical standards and certifications and is part of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), a global federation of around 140 national standards bodies that promotes standardisation to facilitate international trade and develop quality management standards.

The BSI's analysis assessed seven sectors across nine countries. It ranked the built environment sector sixth out of seven in AI readiness, with a score of 1.9 out of 5.

Its newly released International AI Maturity Model is a framework that assesses an organisation's readiness and capability to implement artificial intelligence effectively, and it also positions British construction firms at risk of falling behind global competitors in the AI race.
