With over 60 partners and sponsors, Construction Safety Week has received significant attention worldwide, with a key focus to ensure employees are safe, raising increased awareness in the construction of world-class projects. Safety Week has shone a limelight on construction companies and their aim to become leaders in providing outstanding safety on site through sufficient collaboration and technological expertise. National Safety week is sponsored by members of The Construction Industry Safety Initiative (CISI) and the Incident & Injury Free Executive Forum (IIF). Additional support comes from the Alliance Partners, many of which are non-profit associations.

Creating a shared safety culture is paramount. Walsh Canada Vice President Craig Lesurf said, “It’s not about individual corporate safety statistics. Safety Week is about showing unity and leadership across the entire industry, that we must look out for one another to make sure that everyone goes home safe to their loved ones every day.”

Increased technologies

The theme for safety week being ‘In Our Hands,’ is highly significant. With over one million ER visits resulting from work-related hand injuries, according to AGC California, 70 percent could have been prevented if workers wore proper gloves. To this effect, Nottingham Trent University have created E-gloves to protect workers from dangerous vibration levels caused by various equipment on site.  Hand injuries are also second only to back strains as the main cause for absence at work, according to government agencies in the US and Canada.

With over 900 fatalities in the construction sector in 2015, New York has recently implemented new measures to ensure a reduction in worker fatalities and serious injuries. The new safety bill will adopt six areas of focus, where construction companies could face fines of up to $25,000. This is in addition to new technologies and apps to provide increase sharing and collaborative working, and give greater oversight within construction projects, along with increased security and visibility. In addition to traditional training, ClickSafety’s online learning management system helps provide sufficient training opportunities and solutions to support this collaborative and shared safety culture, and successfully sponsors National Safety Week.

Even transport companies are showing their support

The Florida Department of Transportation, Infrastructure Ontario and the LA Metro are all becoming involved in Construction Safety Week, providing an increased awareness of employee safety and wellbeing, and will be attending a number of events throughout the month.
