Skanska is building across the globe with multiple projects throughout construction, healthcare and sports industries

Multinational construction and development company Skanska is engaged in a raft of major construction projects worldwide.

In its native Stockholm, the company  is involved in a US$190mn rebuild of Slussen in Stockholm. Slussen -- Swedish for 'locks' -- is an area of central Stockholm named after the locks between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea.

The company is helping protect infrastructure around Lake Mälaren from flooding, helping to secure drinking water for two million people.

The project involves extensive tunneling, and the construction of stabilising pavements, made both of granite and hard-wearing synthetic grass. With completion expected by the end of 2028, this project further cements Skanska's role in shaping Stockholm's future cityscape and improving urban connectivity.

Also in the Swedish capital, the company has secured a US$61mn contract to build a new sports arena. The project is for a 25,000-square-metre facility designed to host indoor sports such as handball and basketball and involves preserving parts of an historic old brewery building.

With an emphasis on recycling and material reuse, the project will repurpose various fixtures, including lighting, sanitary ware, doors, bricks and ceilings.

Skanska has also signed a contract with a healthcare client in Northwest United States.

This deal is worth US$75mn, and marks another milestone in Skanska's expansion in the American healthcare sector, reinforcing its specialism of delivering complex healthcare facilities

The project is already underway, with completion scheduled for Q4 2025. It promises to bring state-of-the-art healthcare facilities to the Northwestern United States, and will potentially improve patient care and medical services in the area.

Skanska has also announced the US$30mn second phase of its residential project in Warsaw, Poland, demonstrating the company's commitment to urban development in Eastern Europe.

NU Warszawa Wola will encompass two buildings, featuring 136 apartments and seven commercial units. The company says the project showcases its focus on sustainability and modern living.

The buildings will incorporate eco-friendly solutions to enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions, including smart home systems for remote control of heating, lighting, and other utilities.

Photovoltaic panels are also planned for one building's rooftop to reduce electricity costs.

Skanska's Millbank project will restore original building façade

Another key Skanska project is its work on redeveloping part of historic Millbank, near the Houses of Parliament, in Westminster. The company will create a nine-storey office building with two basement levels. The deal was secured for a US$134mn contract with Baola Properties.

The project will include reconstruction of the original historic façade, which has been deconstructed by demolition contractor McGee. It will be incorporated into the new structure to maintain and enhance the building’s historic character.

Construction is set to commence in July 2024, with completion expected by January 2027.
