Unifying communications and intelligence

At the centre of Nokia's approach is the idea that operational resilience depends on bringing computing power directly to the point of need, rather than relying solely on centralised systems. 

Cognitive Operations combines AI-agentic assistance, a live 3D digital twin of operations, real-time video analytics, predictive maintenance and autonomous safety monitoring into one platform. 

The result is a dynamic hybrid wireless network with no single point of access failure, helping keep operations running even in the toughest environments.

Edge hardware and ecosystem partnerships

The platform's edge component, the Cognitive Edge Node (CEN), is a rugged network and edge compute platform combining advanced connectivity, AI-driven multi-access networking and accelerated edge computing. 

Embedded on-device Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)-accelerated computing increases intelligence in field-deployed vehicles and remote locations, allowing decisions to be made locally rather than waiting on a distant data centre.

Nokia has designed the CEN with an ecosystem of partners in mind, integrating third-party technologies to extend its capabilities.

 Key elements of that ecosystem include:

  • On-premises deployment using local IT infrastructure, for operators who need to keep processing on site
  • Cloud-hosted deployment through the Microsoft Azure Marketplace, enabling faster rollout
  • Integration of Rajant's InstaMesh technology, built on its Kinetic Mesh wireless networking approach
  • AI-agentic assistance layered across communications and compute functions
  • A live 3D digital twin providing a continuous, unified operational picture

Applications across critical sectors

Cognitive Operations launches with three vertical applications, each tailored to sectors where communication failure is not an option. 

For mining, the platform brings its full AI capability to site operations through the resilient connectivity of the Cognitive Edge Node, available both on-premises and via Microsoft Azure. 

For public safety and emergency services, the platform introduces the Vehicle as a Node concept, where response vehicles self-organise into a distributed field intelligence network, sharing a live situational picture and processing video analytics locally. 

For defence and tactical operations, the platform extends to the battlefield edge, with vehicles and units forming a secure, self-organising tactical network.

Microsoft Azure 

Microsoft Azure hosts Cognitive Operations for cloud-based deployment through the Azure Marketplace, allowing mining operators in particular to roll out the platform in days rather than months. The collaboration pairs Nokia's edge and communications expertise with Microsoft's cloud infrastructure, giving operators flexibility to choose between on-premises and cloud-hosted delivery models depending on their operational needs.

Rajant Corporation

The pioneer of Kinetic Mesh wireless networking, has integrated its InstaMesh technology directly into Nokia's Cognitive Edge Node. Sagar Chandra, Executive Vice President of Global Sales at Rajant, has described the collaboration as combining the best of both companies' core strengths, offering customers a more resilient wireless network alongside an integrated AI platform for demanding field environments.

NVIDIA 

NVIDIA has entered a strategic partnership with Nokia focused on artificial intelligence—radio access network (AI-RAN) innovation, supporting the transition from 5G to 6G networks. The collaboration includes functional testing of Nokia's anyRAN software on NVIDIA's GPU-accelerated AI-RAN platform, alongside joint work with operators to adopt AI-driven radio access network technologies that enhance performance and support growing mobile AI traffic.
