Morgan Sindall Construction has appointed Nick Corrigan as Area Director for its North East and Cumbria business, aptly placing a Hartlepool-born industry veteran at the helm of one of the contractor's most active regional operations.

Corrigan brings 30 years of construction experience to the role, most of it across the North of England. As Morgan Sindall delivers public and private sector schemes across the region worth between Ā£10m (US$14m) and Ā£100m (US$136m), the appointment is significant for the business.

"This is a part of the world I know well and care deeply about," he says.

"There's huge potential for growth in both the North East and in Cumbria, not least because of the renewed focus from the top levels of government on rebalancing the UK economy and supporting the UK regions."

Why Nick took the role with Morgan Sindall

Nick points to Morgan Sindall's decentralised operating model as a major factor in the appeal of the Area Director role.

"The business has a genuine local presence and local knowledge," he says.

"That means we can make decisions that are right for our local business and our customers.

ā€œI've also seen first-hand the strength of Morgan Sindall's commitment to social impact and the quality of the systems it has in place to make sure local people benefit, local supply chains are involved, and the local pound is valued."

Morgan Sindall’s diverse North East and Cumbria projects

Morgan Sindall's North East and Cumbria portfolio spans defence, education and leisure infrastructure among others.

Defence work includes the Defence Estate Optimisation Army Programme at Marne Barracks in Catterick.

The project involves creating 205 new and refurbished bedspaces, a workshop, garage space and sports and storage facilities, preparing the barracks for the arrival of the Royal Engineers' 21 Engineer Regiment from Ripon.

The group has worked on classroom expansion at TTE Middlesbrough College and the construction of Callerton Academy, a 1,200-pupil secondary school built with solar PV panels and biodiverse green roofs.

It is currently restoring and expanding Appleby Grammar School, which involves conserving the Grade II-listed building and constructing a new laboratory and technology facilities.

For leisure infrastructure, Morgan Sindall is building Outer West Leisure Centre in Newcastle.

Local focus as Morgan Sindall continues to grow

Morgan Sindall’s North East and Cumbria business sits within the company's broader "North" region, which also covers Greater Manchester, Liverpool and Yorkshire.

"There is a great deal of focus on investment in the North East and Cumbria and Nick is exactly the kind of leader we want at the helm of our regional business," says Simon Arnott, Managing Director for Morgan Sindall Construction in the North.
