Urban construction increasingly means working within tight footprints, tighter deadlines and stricter emissions expectations. 

For contractors operating in dense city centres, this places a premium on lifting equipment that can be transported, erected and operated by a lean crew without sacrificing capacity or reach. 

Singapore's equipment rental group Hiap Heng has responded by adding the Liebherr MK 88-4.1E mobile construction crane to its fleet of more than 100 large-scale machines. 

It complements Hiap Heng’s existing mix of mobile cranes, crawler cranes and aerial work platforms, and reflects a broader industry shift toward electric-drive lifting solutions for space-constrained sites.

Compact design for dense urban sites

The MK 88-4.1E is built around a vertical tower that allows lifting work to be carried out directly on a structure, including over obstructions that would block a conventional mobile crane's line of sight or swing radius. 

Combined with an asymmetrical outrigger configuration and a small footprint, this gives the crane wide working radii and high performance while occupying minimal ground space.

This is a configuration Liebherr designed specifically for use in densely built-up city centres. 

According to Liebherr's published specifications, the crane delivers:

• 8,000kg maximum lifting capacity 
• 45m maximum radius 
• 59.10m maximum hook height

These characteristics put it firmly in the category of cranes able to serve multi-storey commercial, residential and mixed-use developments from a constrained inner-city plot.

Additionally, the crane's electrically driven systems can run from an integrated generator or from site power, optionally at 32 amps.

For Hiap Heng, the appeal lies in the range of project types the crane opens up.

Beyond its physical footprint, Hiap Heng chose the MK 88-4.1E for the simplicity of its operation across every phase of a job.

As a taxi crane, its transport, erection and operation can all be handled by a single person, and it can be made ready for use in a fraction of the time a conventional crane setup would need, without requiring additional transport units to support assembly.

 That speed of deployment, paired with high lifting capacity, long reach and precise control, is designed to keep workflows moving during demanding lifting operations, to the point where, in some cases, a single crane and crew can serve several construction sites within one day.

"With the MK 88-4.1E, we can support projects more cost-effectively and significantly reduce set-up times,” adds Joyce.

Manitowoc is a US-based crane manufacturer whose Grove brand produces all-terrain mobile cranes. Hiap Heng made its first Grove acquisition with a 300-tonne GMK6300L-1, adding an optional 21-metre fly jib for extra reach. The crane has since been deployed on high-rise construction and industrial maintenance projects, including a Singapore petrochemical plant shutdown.
