The Construction Impact of atNorth's Metro Data Centre

atNorth has revealed plans to develop a new 30MW metro data centre in Stockholm, Sweden, expanding its Nordic footprint to eleven sites.
The new site, known as SWE02, will be built near the company’s first Swedish data centre, which opened in March 2022. atNorth says the expansion reflects continued demand for scalable infrastructure across the region.
Defining the metro data centre
What distinguishes the new site as a metro data centre? The new high-performance facility from atNorth will be located within a major urban area – in this case Stockholm – enabling low-connectivity, fast data processing and accessibility to end-users.
The Nordic high-density colocation and built-to-suit data centre provider says the facility will be located close to its existing Stockholm campus, SWE01, enabling customers to deploy connected clusters across both locations.
Sustainable construction and heat reuse
A key feature of the planned facility will be its heat reuse technology. The company says excess heat generated at the site will be recovered and recycled for use within the local community through a partnership with Stockholm Exergi.
Peter Sivengård, Business Project Manager at Stockholm Exergi, says: “We are proud to collaborate with atNorth to recycle heat to meet a local need within Stockholm.
“By working together, we can ensure efficient use of our resources and contribute to our country’s circular economy.”
atNorth has increasingly focused on sustainability measures within its portfolio, positioning heat reuse as a core component of new developments.
Supporting redundancy and workload separation
According to atNorth, SWE02 will allow seamless cluster operations between its two Stockholm campuses while offering separation of customer workloads. The company says this will enhance resilience and redundancy across deployments. The data centre is scheduled to go live in Q4 2027.
Stockholm officials have also welcomed the development, noting its role in strengthening the city’s digital infrastructure capacity.
Karin Wanngård, Mayor of Stockholm, says: “We are delighted that atNorth has chosen the Kista area for an additional energy efficient data centre campus that will contribute to the city’s climate efforts.
“The development and subsequent operational phase of this data centre will bring employment opportunities for our community and further position Stockholm as a hub for digital infrastructure excellence.”
New substation to strengthen energy resilience
atNorth’s expansion in the Stockholm region will also include wider infrastructure improvements. A new electrical substation is set to be constructed by Swedish network company Ellevio, with the aim of improving resilience across the surrounding power grid.
Nils Rönnbäck, Director Connections Industry and Productions at Ellevio, says: “atNorth’s sustainable data centre solutions mirror society's growing need for data resources and the role of electrification to ensure responsible, fossil free operations.
“Ellevio are pleased to build and provide long-term grid connection and help the SWE02 campus deliver sustainable IT infrastructure for a modern society.”
atNorth says the development supports both local network stability and the future growth of digital infrastructure in Stockholm.
Growth strategy across the Nordics
The Stockholm announcement follows a series of recent developments from atNorth, including the expansion of two Icelandic campuses and securing land in Sollefteå, Sweden for a future mega site.
The company has also signed a heat reuse agreement with Denmark’s largest waste-to-energy provider Vesforbrænding and announced colocation partnerships with Nokia, Crusoe and 6G AI Sweden AB.
Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO of atNorth, says: “The expansion of our presence in Stockholm is a clear reflection of the growing demand for responsible data centre operators who can combine technical excellence with sustainable operations.”
“As high-performance digital infrastructure becomes increasingly business critical, companies are seeking partners who prioritize energy efficiency, sustainable design and long-term community impact – values that are deeply embedded in atNorth’s growth strategy.”
With SWE02 now planned for delivery in 2027, atNorth continues to scale its Nordic platform alongside growing demand for sustainable metro data centre capacity.
