Dornan's Irish Data Centre Project Amid Energy Challenge

Dornan, a Turner company, has marked two significant early milestones on a €48m (US$56m) data centre development in Ireland.

The company is serving as general contractor, with responsibility for the project’s civil, structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical scopes. A groundbreaking ceremony brought together the project team and key stakeholders, while the subsequent installation of structural steel began ahead of the baseline programme.

A collaborative construction milestone

The groundbreaking ceremony recognised the work completed during the early stages of the development, as well as the coordination required to bring the project to construction stage.

Delivering a data centre of this scale and complexity requires close integration between civil, structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical disciplines.

The ceremony provided an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of the project team, specialist consultants and supply-chain partners involved in establishing the project’s foundations. Structural steel installation subsequently commenced ahead of schedule.

Responding to rising energy demand

The Irish data centre market that is placing increasing demands on electricity generation and grid infrastructure.

As data centre capacity expands, questions around how Ireland will provide reliable, affordable and lower-carbon power are becoming increasingly important for developers, contractors and infrastructure planners.

The discussion includes a combination of renewable generation, upgraded transmission networks, interconnectors and, increasingly, the potential role of nuclear power and small modular reactors.

The groundbreaking ceremony and early start to structural steel installation demonstrate strong coordination across Dornan’s Advanced Technology Division and the wider project team.
