Neil Davidson, Group VP of Deltek -- an architecture, construction and engineering specialist -- on the impact on AI and how the industry can be smarter

What does Deltek do?

We deliver cutting-edge software and information solutions designed to transform the way project-based businesses operate.

With a focus on architecture, construction and engineering firms, we empower firms to drive successful projects, boost productivity and maximise revenue.

Our industry expertise, combined with AI-powered intelligence, enhances decision-making, automates routine tasks, and helps predict project outcomes with precision.

What is your role there?

I work with a talented team dedicated to empowering project-based businesses in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Agency, Research and Consulting sectors.

With a foundation of industry expertise, we aim to understand the unique challenges these firms face and deliver solutions that help them seamlessly navigate their digital transformation journey.

My background in law and strategy, combined with years of industry experience, has provided me with a broad perspective on how technology can fuel efficiency and growth.

It’s incredibly rewarding to witness how the right tools can help these businesses not just survive, but optimise performance against the backdrop of today’s complex environment.

What are the benefits of adopting AI?

Our research shows that nearly three quarters (74%) of firms believe investing in and successfully implementing artificial intelligence (AI) this year will give them a significant competitive advantage and expand the services they can offer.

I couldn't agree more; AI has the potential to enhance project timelines, boost operational efficiency, and drive profitability. In fact, 41% of firms are confident that a successful AI implementation will lead to increased profits.

But to unlock these benefits, firms must first identify the AI technology that best fits their needs and bridge any knowledge gaps among employees and clients. It’s a significant challenge, but the rewards are worth the effort.

AI is already being widely adopted. Almost all firms are leveraging traditional artificial intelligence/machine learning (ML) (98%) or generative AI (97%) in areas like computer vision, business process automation, design analysis, and project outcome prediction.

While there are concerns about its workforce impact, around three quarters (72%) believe successful AI implementation would improve overall staff job satisfaction.

Deltek helps architecture, construction and engineering firms boost productivity.

What's the future of engineering, construction and architecture?

Just under one in three firms (28%) say that the rising complexity of projects is the biggest challenge that they face, which is driving the need for upskilling current staff and competing for top talent.

Firms are also aiming to mature digitally over the next three years, and there will be continued investment in emerging technologies like AI, data analytics, and cyber security.

ESG goals are also becoming more important, with 75% of firms planning to commit more resources to achieve these goals. Put simply, change is everywhere.

How can project lifecycles become smarter?

To create smarter project lifecycles, it is crucial to adopt a data-driven approach and digitise processes, which enables firms to embrace emerging technologies such as AI. Key challenges, like ensuring the quality of deliverables and enhancing collaboration, can be addressed with smart solutions.

By improving the accuracy of tracking KPIs - such as project profitability, budget, and schedules – you can make better decisions. Automating manual processes, particularly in financial management, can dramatically boost efficiency.

Adopting the right digital tools not only enables smarter project lifecycles but also helps attract and retain top talent, deliver value to clients, and differentiate firms in a competitive market. Integrating AI and data analytics throughout the project lifecycle can provide valuable insights, automate manual processes and significantly improve outcomes for firms of all sizes.

Best advice ever received?

My father told me that if I wanted to be in technology, then the most important thing was to always look after your customers. It is the best advice I have ever received. This is a core value that I have used to steer my own actions and lead my teams over the years.

Our customers rely on us as a partner, and it is a responsibility that we take seriously at Deltek.
